Boring as a Feature

Sometimes the cleverest thing you can do in a codebase is choose the boring option.

Not because cleverness is bad. Clever solutions can have huge payoffs. They can simplify a messy system, remove whole classes of bugs, or make an awkward problem feel obvious in hindsight.

But clever code has carrying costs.

It can be harder for the next person to understand. It can hide the shape of the problem behind an abstraction. It can make future changes feel risky because the idea behind the implementation is not immediately visible.

And sometimes that next person is you, six months later, wondering what past-you was so pleased about.


Boring Is Not Lazy

Doing things the boring way can look less impressive.

It might mean writing the explicit branch, using the familiar pattern, or accepting a little repetition instead of introducing a new abstraction.

That is not wasted effort. It is energy spent on readability.

Boring code is easier to debug, easier to review, and easier to change under pressure. It leaves fewer puzzles behind for the team.


Clever on Purpose

The answer is not to avoid clever ideas.

Some experiments are worth it. Sometimes the clever solution really does pay for itself. But if you are going to take that path, make the trade visible.

Time-box the experiment. Explain what you are trying to prove. Talk to the wider team about the upside, the risk, and what will happen if it does not work out.

Cleverness is much easier to accept when it comes with context.


The Default Matters

A useful question is not “is this clever?”

It is: “what does this cleverness buy us?”

If the answer is meaningful, go explore it. If the answer is mostly that the code feels elegant to write, the boring version may be the better feature.

Boring by default. Clever on purpose.
